Uzume Taiko
Uzume Taiko is West Coast Canada’s premiere professional taiko drumming group. Performing both nationally and internationally since 1988, the group has toured their unique West Coast Canadian taiko drumming styles internationally. Led by Artistic Director Bonnie Soon, Uzumer Taiko are especially known for their collaborative and artistically open aesthetic, within the context of multicultural BC. Musical Ensemble collaborators have ranged from Chor Leoni to the SFU Pipe Band and South Asian Arts (dhol drums and Bhangra dance) and they have collaborated with solo performers from African drummers to flamenco dancers.
The Bills
The Bills are one of Canada’s most musically impressive and well-rounded folk music ensembles. The band features five virtuosic and highly creative musicians coming together to create an instrumental and vocal tour de force, with compelling arrangements of dance tunes from around the world alongside self-penned songs sung in full-throated harmony. As BC’ers, this is a group that speaks to our experience, with its diverse cultural influences, sense of freedom and creativity, and stories that tell of life on the west coast. We are excited to finish our festival with one of the finest folk music exports this province has ever produced.
Rhythm, Melody, and Musical Expression with Waleed Kush
This masterclass explores the deep relationship between rhythm, melody, and phrasing, and how these elements shape musical expression across traditions. Through guided exercises and live demonstrations, participants will engage with rhythm not only as a structural foundation, but as a physical, embodied experience connected to the human body and mind. Participants are encouraged to bring an instrument, but it is not required.
