Time: Saturday, July 11th – 1:00pm & Saturday, July 18th – 1:00pm

Location: Ranger Station Art Gallery (98 Rockwell Drive)

Cost: $5 at the door

Facilitated and hosted by Soozi Schlanger

Memory Boxes

Soozi will invite people to ‘art’ their own stories …their daily lives… memories… their environment.

Participants are encouraged to bring photos, written material, small memorabilia to be incorporated into the concave, interior space of the cradle board. (8x6x2” – a cradle board is essentially a rigid wooden structure much like a canvas.)

Everybody has a story to tell…this workshop invites you to tell yours.

Soozi will demonstrate the media that was used in her series on the exterior side of the cradle board.- charcoal, mineral spirits. In addition, she will open up the opportunity to explore mixed media / found objects on the interior framed space as well, thereby expanding the storytelling by having it on both sides of the cradle board.  A small cradle board / two-sided one interior space one exterior space, can tell quite an impactful, poetic visual story…with a variety of visual media.

A cradle board is essentially a framed wooden canvas. Because of its rigidity, its front, sides and back are all usable surfaces for artistic self-expression. I would like to encourage the visual exploration of personal memory on all sides of the cradle board. I invite the participants to bring memorabilia or little objects that can be housed on the interior space – the concave space…. any bits of time that were collected that are meaningful to you and you alone!

We can turn these into part of your story on the interior space of a cradle board.
Having two sides to work on essentially describes our human experience – what we see/show on the outside and what we feel/know on the inside. We will work with the two-dimensional expression on the front side. We can work with a three-dimensional expression on the inside. In essence, we will create both a two and three-dimensional piece of art. Please bring stuff you’ve collected over time, poems, photos, pictures, small objects, and we can incorporate them into this memory piece. We will be using mostly charcoal, dark pencils, mineral spirits, and colour washes for the front face ‘ postcard’. At the end of our sessions, we can have a show where the cradle boards are hanging from the ceiling so the art can be seen from all sides. My goal is to guide you in your own personal expression as opposed to giving you concrete techniques or a ‘how to’ experience…. because these art pieces will be your personal visual stories. Individual and families are welcome to work on a project singularly or with others.
