Plastic Kebabs
Entirely made of recycled plastic material, Plastic Kebabs is a wind and human touch activated installation made of colorful plastic. In the spirit of sustainability, Chilliwack artist, Sylvie Roussel-Janssens is repurposing leftover cut- off material from previous art projects. They are mostly the three-dimensional edges of flatter pieces that were used in the “Mend” series and other projects. The small pieces are pierced and piled on long recycled steel wire rods that are to be planted in a grass, dirt, or sand surface. This all-weather installation adapts to all outdoor spaces; flat or slightly hilly, in one dense group or in a linear composition. Visitors are encouraged to gently wiggle the elements of the resilient installation.
To accompany the temporary installation, I propose a drop-in workshop where participants of all ages can make smaller versions of the plastic kebabs, using coat hangers and pre-drilled bits of recycled plastic to make their own pieces.
All materials are provided. It takes 5 to 20 minutes to make a single kebab. This project is ideal as a multigenerational activity.
