Zapateado with El Balcón!
Come join Montreal based band El Balcón to learn some traditional percussive dancing from Veracruz, Mexico. All ages welcome.
El Balcón is a band that could only have emerged from the culturally rich city of Montreal. Their sound is created through Mexican folk instruments like the Jarana, Requinto and “La Tarima” (Polyrhythm foot board for traditional rhythmic dancing), blended with microtonal melodies of the Middle East and North Africa on the violin and oud. This heady melodic mixture is grounded by the earthiness of the upright bass, and an array of masterful percussion including cajon, riqq, pandero, and Kijada del Burro (donkey jaw bone). With two vocalists singing in multiple languages, the band entrances audiences with their fiery performances and spirit of collaboration.
